La Conner sits right on the water, and that changes what a deck has to survive year after year. Salt-laden air off the Swinomish Channel works its way into fasteners, flashing, and end grain faster than it does further inland. Composite decking doesn't make any of that go away by itself. It's a good material for this environment, but only when it's installed with the moisture and airflow issues actually addressed. Getting the Substructure Right
This is the part of the job that determines whether a composite deck holds up in La Conner or turns into a warranty headache. Composite boards are only as good as what they're fastened to, and a framing package built for a dry inland lot doesn't automatically hold up on the water.
Ledger and Flashing

Joists and Hardware
Even under composite decking, the joists are almost always still wood, so joist tape or an equivalent protective barrier over the top of every joist is standard on our jobs — it keeps fastener penetrations from becoming entry points for moisture. All fasteners, brackets, and hangers are corrosion-rated for coastal exposure; standard galvanized hardware corrodes faster here than it does even twenty minutes inland, and rust streaks on composite decking are almost always a hardware problem, not a board problem.
Board Selection for Salt Air and Moss
Not all composite is built the same, and the differences matter more in a marine climate than in a dry one.
- Fully capped composite — a protective polymer shell wraps the board on all sides, which is what actually resists moisture absorption and staining. This is what we recommend for anything near the water.
- Uncapped or partially capped composite — costs less but the exposed core can wick moisture at cut ends and fastener holes, which is a real liability in a wet climate.
- Board color and texture — lighter colors and low-sheen, textured surfaces show less of the chalky residue that moss and mildew leave behind after cleaning, compared to dark, smooth-finish boards.
- Grooved-edge boards with hidden fasteners — keep the walking surface free of exposed screw heads, which is where standing water and grime collect first.
Cut ends matter more here than most homeowners expect. Every field cut — at a house wall, a post, a stair stringer — needs to be sealed with a manufacturer-approved end cap or sealant. An unsealed cut end is the fastest way for a capped board to start absorbing water anyway.
Drainage, Airflow, and Ground Clearance
A deck that can't shed water and breathe underneath will grow moss no matter what decking material sits on top. We look at three things on every La Conner project: slope of the framing for positive drainage away from the house, enough clearance between the ground (or a lower roof) and the joists for real airflow, and venting at skirting or under low decks so trapped humid air has somewhere to go.
