We think that cost is justified by what you get in return, but we're not going to pretend fiber cement is the cheapest option on the table, because it isn't.

Vinyl Siding

Vinyl is inexpensive and low-maintenance in mild climates, but it's a poor match for driving rain and wind exposure. It relies on lap joints and J-channels that can allow water intrusion behind the panel in wind-driven conditions, and it can warp or crack in temperature swings and impact events. In a marine environment, we've found the moisture-management weaknesses outweigh the upfront savings.

LP SmartSide, Cemplank, Allura

LP SmartSide is an engineered wood product — better than old-school wood in some respects, but it's still wood-based, meaning it's more vulnerable to moisture intrusion at cut edges and seams than fiber cement, especially in a climate where surfaces stay wet for days. Cemplank and Allura are fiber cement competitors to Hardie, and while they're the same general material category, we standardized on Hardie for its factory ColorPlus finish quality, product-line depth (specifically its climate-zone engineering), and the strength and transferability of its warranty — consistency we didn't feel we could guarantee across multiple fiber cement suppliers.

Primed Spruce and Cedar

Real wood siding has genuine aesthetic appeal, and cedar in particular has a long track record when it's maintained diligently. But "maintained diligently" is the catch — wood siding demands a repainting and recaulking cycle that most homeowners underestimate, and in a climate with Anacortes's moisture load and moss pressure, that maintenance window shrinks. We'd rather put a homeowner into a product that tolerates the climate instead of one that requires constant vigilance to survive it.
